An October afternoon along the lakes of the Eastern Sierra
A short record from October 2, 2021, moving from a marina to lakes framed by forest. The day stayed quiet, with autumn color appearing in small stretches along the water.
Starting at the marina
Around noon, boats and docks sat in a calm mountain lake. Autumn had not taken over the landscape; it appeared only in small patches around the water.
About two and a half hours later, a darker peak rose more clearly above another stretch of water. The light and mountain profile gave this lake a different mood, even within the same afternoon.
Autumn along the shore
Across the water, a narrow band of yellow and orange trees followed the shoreline. It was not a full display of fall color, but the reflection made the change of season easy to see.
A little later, someone stopped on the rocky shore to photograph the lake. That small human scale described the pace of the day better than another wide landscape could have.
The shape of the lakes from above
After 3:40 PM, the viewpoint rose above the water. Lake, wetland, and conifer forest came into a single frame, revealing a long, narrow shape that was difficult to read from the shore.
As the sun leaned toward the mountains, a small boat crossed the lower water. The sequence that began at the marina ended with the forest and waterways spread out below.
Autumn did not cover the landscape that day. It changed only a few edges of the water, leaving the shape of the lakes and the afternoon light to carry most of the photographs.
