Weathered Structures Near the Salton Sea

A brief stop on March 28, 2021, among collapsed wooden frames and objects left in the desert near the Salton Sea.

A room left in the desert

At 5:33 PM, the first scene was a torn chair in front of a small structure reduced to its frame. A sign behind it still read POST NO BILLS.

From farther away, the words POST MODERN appeared across the front. Most of the roof and walls were gone, but the open frame still held the shape of a doorway.

Objects and open frames

Farther along, tires, buckets, fabric, and other discarded materials formed a roughly human shape. From the photographs alone, it is difficult to tell where debris ended and a deliberate installation began.

The empty metal structure divided the blue sky into a series of rectangles. Although it had no walls, it still worked like a frame that directed the view.

The entire sequence lasted about four minutes. Rather than a broad record of the Salton Sea, it was a short stop focused on old structures and objects in one area near the lake.
