Sequoia in July, Looking Up at the Scale of the Trees

A July 2021 sequence from Tunnel Log to the vertical forest, the roots of a fallen tree, and a quiet waterside stop late in the afternoon.

Starting at Tunnel Log

The record begins at Tunnel Log in Sequoia National Park on July 23, 2021. The idea is easy to describe—a road cut through a fallen tree—but the scale is harder to understand when one trunk spans the entire roadway.

Looking Straight Up

A little later, the camera turned directly toward the canopy. Trunks frame the open sky, and even a wide photograph cannot find the end of every tree. The scale of the forest is felt less through measurements than through the way it changes where you look.

Large Even After Falling

Around 2 PM, two photographs recorded opposite sides of a fallen tree’s root system. Tangled roots and split wood fill each frame like a structure of their own. The tree is no longer standing, but its roots still show how much space it once occupied.

Water Late in the Afternoon

The final photograph opens toward water between pine trees and rock, with a bridge along the left side. After the upward views and close studies of wood, this frame returns the eye to a long horizontal landscape.

The sequence is less a checklist of named trees than a record of changing directions. Tunnel Log lies across the road, the grove pulls the eye upward, and the last scene opens outward across the water.
